Shut up about your idea... for your own good.

An interesting article from Peter Shallard went online recently. In it he makes the case that talking about a project too much can actually take away your desire to do it! The excitement that you should be getting once you have completed the project comes early. Talking about it is as exciting as doing it.

We often write scripts or make films because we want to say something and share our love of an idea. Sharing that with too many people before completion may mean we feel it is mission accomplished and we take our foot off the pedal.

Same can go for crowd funding too. The energy that goes into getting the funding and the excitement of reaching the target can in fact steal some of the dedication needed for the film itself.

No easy answers here - but as with all difficult issues, an understanding of it can help avoid it.

Angular light leak

This is a slightly different kind of light leak. It's angular in nature due to the glass prism used in place of a lens during the filming.

I was finding that I was often using the light leaks as an alpha channel to add moving interest to a backdrop - or as a wipe. Yet I was missing something with lines and angle, hence this clip.

You can download it in 1080p HD format from here:

I had to use h264 (but with the best quality it can go to) in order to make it less than 200MB.

If you like this and want more then you can go to the whole archive of lens flares and light leaks here.

They are offered under creative commons. Read more here. If you are super kind and get something out of using these - or use them for commercial projects - then please donate a small amount and I can do some more -

End of the spec month - what's the result?

February was my personal project month as I wrote about at the start of the month. I think it went quite well and I really made a dent in the projects. I didn't quite get as far as I hoped, for example, I only got to page 40 on my spec TV script, but have planned out a short series.

The thing that really worked was the 2 hour chunks method. I recommend this to anyone.

March looks busy now, but I'll be aiming to return to this focus-month approach soon.
