BBC Interactive Radio - new formats with new writing challenges

retro radio
New media writers may be interested in some of the new work being done by the BBC. Here is a short extract from the full article...

A radio that is able to change a broadcast depending on where you are and what you are doing has been demonstrated by the BBC.
The Perceptive Radio, produced by the corporation's Future Media North Lab, is thought to be a world first.
The team produced a computer-generated radio drama where the script altered depending on factors such as weather.

You can experience an online version of the techniques at - But I found it only worked in Chrome.

Miyazaki on why 'Hero and Villain' is not the only story dynamic

In the short comic below Ashley Allis has captured the philosophy of Hayao Miyazaki (writer / animator of My Neighbour Totoro etc) and adapted it in a short series of images.

It is a challenge to the hero / villain dynamic of writing. Instead challenging us to focus not on winning and losing or black and white, but instead on balance.

Podcast Episode 28: the Tim free zone

Cool. A new podcast. This one is even better as I'm not in it. Actually it was a great experience to listen to the podcast as an outsider. I enjoyed it. I think it could be one of the best episodes so far as the discussion with Jo Ho ranges across writing skills, career advice and classic question of 'breaking in'. A return to flippant ramblings next time I'm sure.

Harry Potter and the Structure of Details

On this blog I often say that planning is as important as writing. Not more important - but as important.

Above is another example of that, this time from JK Rowling. The image (click it to enlarge) speaks for itself really. Planning doesn't need to be neat, it doesn't need to be fixed in stone, it doesn't need to be something you share with others. It's job is to keep you on the right track and to free your mind from plotting when you are doing the detailed writing.

Yoda Chronicles Trailer

Just a quick post. Here is a trailer I edited together for a new Lego game made by my chums down at 4T2. Good fun to edit because as soon as you lay out the music everything seems cool from then on!

This is my own upload as the official Lego version can't be embedded.

It's free to play the game and its out now:
If you fancy it play online here -
Or download for iOS here -
